A Weekend Without Sleep Part One

It is Saturday night and I am sleeping on Beth and Rob's couch. Except that I am not sleeping at all. I have forgotten my sleep meds back in my apartment in Sacramento. I only realize this when I touched down upon my new old home, Chicago. This is the third night I have been unable to sleep. I am unsure that I have slept at all. There are moments where I am without thought and there are moments where I am in a state of intense stress and fear. The sheet draped over Beth and Rob's brand new couch is wet with cold sweat and my eyes are clinched tight as i recall various memories, as well as things I've never seen before.

I am walking down a hallway that is saturated in a green hue. It's not me, rather I am seeing it through someone else's eyes. There are split seconds of faces, horrified in appearance. Tense. None of the doors in this hallway are open. None of them can be opened. This person who I have become continues to walk at a slow pace, surrounded by an aura of calm. Then in the bottom left hand corner I see the word "Saw" as in the horror/torture porn series of movies. I have never seen a "Saw" movie so I am certain that the first movie does not open like that and everything I just visualized was created by my imagination and I do not know why.

I open my eyes. There is never complete darkness where I sleep, as Beth and Rob's Ukrainian Village apartment is decorated with many windows so lines of orange light seep in. I drag my hand across the floor, searching for anything that feels like leather or a drawstring bag made of cotton. I find my iPod and headphones and I turn on one of those video game podcasts that I have lost interest in. I'm hoping that I will get bored and fall asleep, but like I said, this is the third night I haven't gotten good sleep so I am not optimistic that listening to people I can no longer stand talk about video games will help me finally forget about fear.

Every night of this trip I chastise myself. How could I forget those two orange bottles sitting on my desk? That stupid $40 desk from Walmart that took me three days to build because I lack patience. To further annoy myself, I make a list of things I brought in my backpack. Things I absolutely do not need. Things I brought instead of my medications. Two glasses cases, neither of which have my spare glasses inside of them. Swimming goggles, pssh shit goddamn it. We weren't planning on swimming I hate swimming. A watch that has not had a working battery in it for 3 years.

Saturday

Rest in peace Mitsuhara Misawa

--
from f4w:
Mitsuharu Misawa, one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all-time, was declared dead at 10:10 p.m. Saturday night at a hospital in Hiroshima from an apparent heart attack after being being given a back suplex in a tag team title match.

Misawa would have turned 47 on June 18th.

Misawa, the president of Pro Wrestling NOAH, was teaming with Go Shiozaki in a match challenging Bison Smith & Akitoshi Saito for the GHC tag team championship in Hiroshima. Misawa was given the move at about 8:45 p.m. and knocked unconscious. They were about 27 minutes into the match when the referee immediately stopped the match seeing what had happened.

According to eye witness reports, Saito gave Misawa a "routine" back suplex that was described as a "7" in danger on a scale of one-to-ten. He did not get up. It was chaos in the ring as they attempted to revive him using CPR and the crowd was hushed for a while, and began a "Misawa" chant. He turned purple in the ring and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

His heart stopped beating in the ring.

The wrestlers were told on the bus that he had passed away.

While it is being reported that he passed away at the hospital, he may have actually passed away in the ring.

Misawa was the Japanese high school national wrestling champion at 187 pounds in 1980, and was recruited by Giant Baba into All Japan Pro Wrestling. He gained his first taste of stardom in 1984 when he was chosen to be the second Tiger Mask. After unmasking in 1990, he became an even bigger star after a series of singles matches with Jumbo Tsuruta.

He was Japan's biggest pro wrestling star of the 90s, and one could make a strong case for him as the top wrestler of the decade. He was the Wrestler of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 1999.

After the death of Shohei "Giant" Baba, Misawa wrestled a little over one more year for All Japan Pro Wrestling, while working as company president. After consistently butting heads with owner Motoko Baba, the widow of Shohei Baba, he and 90% of the All Japan roster quit the company to form Pro Wrestling NOAH.

The movie "The Wrestler" opened tonight in Japan. Because of the finish of the movie, this has become part of the story in some outlets in Japan.

THE CORRESPONDENCE CAST EPISODE 7 - I'D BEAT UMS: DRAFT EDITION

What is "I'd Beat Ums" you ask? Well, I think if you listen to the show you'll realize that it's pretty self explanatory. Spiz and Pierre get together and we rank the top 5 people that we would like to beat those with. We don't mean to do it, but our women listeners might get completely offended. That's not true. We are very tasteful when we list our dream scenarios. Then there's some etcetera etcetera. Please leave a comment or question on the post if you like the show. Thoughts on Fallout 3 and What I Plan To Do With My Time

So I finally finished Fallout 3 and I have to say that it would have given Left 4 Dead some competition for "Best Game Evar 2008" had I played it last year but I didn't really pick it up until Christmas and by then I was already stuck on playing Left 4 Dead so I didn't give Fallout 3 much time. I played it for a few hours but found myself getting really annoyed with the game because I felt like my character was so weak that getting into combat was not fun. Fighting mutated moles was too challenging and usually left me with an smidgen of HP. I used to think, "How can anyone think this is fun?"

A couple of weeks ago I gave the game another shot. I didn't try to do quests right away, rather, I just kept fighting Mole Rats and whatever little creatures I could. I just wanted to level up a little and find more guns and ammo. Once I built up a nice collection of weapons, I played some quests and it just became more and more interesting. My character got stronger and the perks were really interesting. I chose to have a Cannibal perk which allowed me to eat humans to gain HP back but every time you ate someone's butt you would lose karma. Also I felt punished every time I ate someone because the camera angle would switch from first person to third person. You have to watch your character eat someone, sound effects included. I thought that was interesting to show that. It's like the game developers wanted you(the player) to see what a fucking asshole you are. I sort of regretting choosing that perk but I never gave it a second thought if I was close to death. "Do what you gotta do." That's what I kept saying all throughout the game.

Some of the scenarios the game put you in really made me think differently, in terms of gaming. I won't spoil things because you should experience the game for yourself. When I play RPG's, usually I try to play the good role; I try to answer politely and I didn't kill if I didn't have to. However, I slowly found myself playing more evil because that would get me the most stuff. I needed to kill because I needed food, money, or guns. After one quest where I reluctantly chose the evil route, I got so mad at myself that I went on a killing spree. I killed a roaming salesman because I wanted blueprints for a weapon and they were ridiculously expensive. I thought, "Shit, what's stopping me from just killing this guy and taking his stuff? I'm going to do that."

Fallout 3 questions your morals. You might do the right thing now, but what if you woke up and actually saw the world and there was nothing but destruction. Would you act the same way? I sure wouldn't have I guess. It was a very thought provoking experience and you can't help but enjoy that feeling. One complaint(besides what I said earlier about being a weak ass at the beginning)is that the ending came out of nowhere. It was very abrupt and that made me really angry, but Bethesda just released some DLC that supposedly changes the ending, as well as increases the level cap from 20 to 30 so I'll be definitely picking that up so I can play some more in The Capital Wasteland. Do some quests, shoot some mutants in the face, get radiated, etc.

***********

Now that I'm jobless, I celebrated today by going to my local library to borrow the first three volumes of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. It's a comic series that the former fucktards behind GFW Radio and the current fucktards of the Out of the Game podcast champion as a must read series. I was there at the library with the wife and it just crossed my mind to see if they had it and they did so I picked them up. I'm still reading Murakami but I'm flying though this first volume of Walking Dead so I can read both. Someone read Walking Dead with me so we can talk about it on teh podcast.

Not only did I get Resident Evil 5 in the mail, I also picked up Raiden Fighter Aces. It's a compilation of all the Raiden games. You remember those games. It was all the thugs were playing at TV Arcade when they weren't playing Street Fighter II. It's a shmup and that's one of my favorite genres. It was only $20 bucks so it was an automatic purchase. I'm sorta debating whether or not to get the new Punch Out Wiimake. I wasn't planning on getting it, but Amazon has it for $40 bucks and that might be the sweet spot in terms of price. I've played Punch Out so many times and they didn't change much(so I've heard) but it got a decent make over and Punch Out is still fun. I just lost my job but I signed up for unemployment and I got some pension monies coming so of course I'm going to get some games. Plus I still need to pack up. Lots to do I guess.

CoaMDR Book Club?

I finally opened up that Murakami book(Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World) Tan gave me to read last year and it has been one of those books that has recharged my interest in literature. I wanted to know if anyone is interested in doing a book club as one of the topics of a future podcast. What I really thought would be cool is if we also included comics because after listening to all these gaming podcasts name drop comics, I decided that after I move back to Sacramento, I'm going to build a nerd fortress and comics(as well as literature) will be a foundation of that fortress. Everyone who is interested should email me with one suggestion for a book and after we have at least 3 or 4 people we can discuss the choices and then settle on one book. I want to start reading Walking Dead but the series is extremely long so we could just do like the first three volumes. I would like as many people in on this as possible so I have a roster of people to ask to record a show. Even if you can't make the recording at least we can use your notes/thoughts as talking points. Anyway, just an idea to get something together.
