Last month, on our sweet podcast(please subscribe) Pierre and I drafted 5 fantasy beat ums. I cann only speak for myself but I did not put as much thought into it as I should have. If given the opportunity I would still beat those girls, but after thinking about it for a month I'd like to recognized some terrible omissions. First here was my draft in it's original state.
1: Zooey Deschanel(picked #1 overall)
I am not second-guessing this pick at all. She is still adorable. ADORABLE. I was staying with my friend's Beth and Rob in Chicago and they had recorded something on their DVR about Gilmore Girls so I wanted to watch it. First commercial is Zooey in a Cotton commercial.
God I want to have sex with the irises in her eyeballs. I'm sorry Zooey I do not talk like that to women. I just think you are the cutest thing and that is how I express that. Anyway, point of the story is that I never watched that Gilmore Girls special. I watched that commercial 5 times though. I'm watching it again as I type. She is my number one no doubt.
2: Anne Hathaway(drafted 4th overall in the 2nd Round)
Looking back on this pick I was sort of wishy washy about it. At the time I had it in my head that Pierre would be definitely be taking Anne Hathaway, so I kind of jumped the gun on her.
Sorry, watching the video again. I should not have added that until after I was done writing. This is going to take much longer.
Just even the thought of talking about Anne Hathaway at the moment is making feel lazy. I guess I think she is really beautiful but I have no attachment to her beyond that. It's not like with other nerd crushes where you at least go to their Wiki page which I have not done for Miss Hathaway. Conclusion: She's on my list, sure come to bed Anne but I have no interest in anything you say.
Sorry, I'm just going to fap to this video and go to sleep. Numbers 3-5 plus my more than honorable mentions.
Oh man. Guys and girls. This game is so fun. Forget the story, just mash on A and the start button. Well, if you need a little bit of story then here you go. You wake up and you've been genetically modified. You can jump real high, your appendages can morph into claws or whips or sharp blades, and you can absorb, or consume people and take their form and their memories. You don't know why or how this has happened to you. So you go on a killing spree through Manhattan to find the truth. It's you against the army and eventually the people because they're mutating as well.
So who cares about that. Your character seems to complain too much, at least in my opinion. Why are you complaining? Dude, you can leap off the tallest buildings in New York, glide down to the street, start chucking cars at tanks, use your arms to stretch out to the helicopter that's now attacking you(a la Dhalsim), hijack the helicopter, and by that point there will be nothing but a fiery mess in front of you. That's the fun I got out of Prototype. I spent most of my time doing the side missions where I would have to sneak into bases by absorbing soldiers. Then I would have to consume the commander to gain more abilities. Everything you do in the game earns you experience(in the game they are called Evolution Points) and you can spend those points to add more abilities. Jump higher, consume faster, new combat moves, and my personal favorite which is the devastator attacks that cover the entire screen. They are indeed devastating.
The combat can be hectic at times. I think they throw too much at you at the end of the game, but I was playing on Normal when I should have been playing on Easy I guess. I should not be surprised about the difficulty spike because you feel so powerful in the game. I mean, what else is the enemies going to do besides throw more challenging enemies at you. Like I said I got more enjoyment out of just blowing up bases, killing as many people as I could, and running and skipping through Manhattan as fast as I could. I think so far Prototype is my favorite game of the summer, but I haven't played much. I played Resident Evil 5 but I don't think I enjoyed it as much as Prototype. I'm not saying you should buy it because a lot of people are tired of these open world/sandbox games, but I think that the addition of these crazy ass killing powers should warrant at least a rental.
That's all I can tell myself these last couple of days. I wake up with the single intention that I have to make this new home of ours as comfortable as possible for my wife who has had her first week of her new career. She has been given Hematology/Oncology first, which is(according to her and her peers)the most difficult rotation to have. She wakes up a little bit before 5am and does not come home until 8pm at the latest.
I go on the internet looking for simple(keyword: SIMPLE)recipes that I can cook that evening. I scrub floors, I vacuum, I water plants, I clear off disorganized coffee tables, I wash dishes, I pick up things at the grocery store, I pick up the mail. I have a hot meal ready as soon as she walks into the door, disheveled and red-eyed. No matter what I do to make her happy, because of the long work day she just had, she can do nothing but flop into my arms, her arms around my ever growing belly, crying on my shoulder. "I'm so tired, Alvin" she whimpers into my ear. I have to bite my lip because we both shouldn't cry but I really want to.
I have no words. I just try to console her with an encouraging rub of the back. Doing that feels so pathetic though because the tears do not stop. I know nothing about the hardships of medical school. I start to feel guilty everytime she comes home completely exhausted because other than doing chores and errands, I'm not working or going to school which I should be doing. It feels like nothing I do matters. She will come home and cry no matter how clean the apartment or how warm and delicious the meal that I just nervously put together tastes.
I tell her about how horrible I feel, and she tries to tell me that what I'm doing is very helpful, but I'm not being receptive to her positive comments. I am not the cause of her pain and I should not take responsibility for all of the wet shoulders I have had to attend to. Still, I hate seeing her like this. Hopefully the next three weeks will go by swiftly. I'm going to do everything my wife needs me to do so that she can make it though this.
I was in a bedroom wearing nothing but an oversized Bart Simpson t-shirt that I would sleep in. Michael came inside the bedroom...
KIDDING
I don't remember much of my life before I was 6 years old, but I do remember going to the Philippines when I was 4 or 5. The three things I still remember to this day are:
-Eating at a burger place called "Pac Man Burger." Even when I was that age I was a fussy eater and I remember my parents taking to burger places a lot during that trip. I question my memories because I can't find any proof on the internet that this place existed. Obviously this was before Manny's time, so when I search for "Pac Man Burger Philippines" I get nothing remotely close to what I'm looking for. Oh internets, you're useless. KIDDING AGAIN
-Getting attacked by a little lap dog. I don't know what I did exactly, but the result of my actions were torn skin, blood, and a lifetime fear of dogs. I don't mind older dogs but I usually just avoid contact with dogs whenever possible.
-Finally, I remember watching "Thriller" for the first time. My brother and I'm guessing it was a cousin of mine were going into another bedroom with a Betamax tape. Of course I followed them like any little brother would. They're going in the other room to watch something cool. I don't think I made it to the entire thing. I enjoyed the music of course, but I think I ran out after Michael changed for the second time in the video. Which sucks because that's when the famous dance sequence happens.
I think that it's interesting that watching Thriller was something I remember. I don't remember much about my early years but I remember that. I was too young to realize how innovative that video was but I had never seen anything like that before then. Watching that video again today I really think that all of the effects, particularly the transformation at the beginning, could still hold up today. It looks really well done. I can go on and on but I don't have to. Everyone loved that video.
It is Saturday night and I am sleeping on Beth and Rob's couch. Except that I am not sleeping at all. I have forgotten my sleep meds back in my apartment in Sacramento. I only realize this when I touched down upon my new old home, Chicago. This is the third night I have been unable to sleep. I am unsure that I have slept at all. There are moments where I am without thought and there are moments where I am in a state of intense stress and fear. The sheet draped over Beth and Rob's brand new couch is wet with cold sweat and my eyes are clinched tight as i recall various memories, as well as things I've never seen before.
I am walking down a hallway that is saturated in a green hue. It's not me, rather I am seeing it through someone else's eyes. There are split seconds of faces, horrified in appearance. Tense. None of the doors in this hallway are open. None of them can be opened. This person who I have become continues to walk at a slow pace, surrounded by an aura of calm. Then in the bottom left hand corner I see the word "Saw" as in the horror/torture porn series of movies. I have never seen a "Saw" movie so I am certain that the first movie does not open like that and everything I just visualized was created by my imagination and I do not know why.
I open my eyes. There is never complete darkness where I sleep, as Beth and Rob's Ukrainian Village apartment is decorated with many windows so lines of orange light seep in. I drag my hand across the floor, searching for anything that feels like leather or a drawstring bag made of cotton. I find my iPod and headphones and I turn on one of those video game podcasts that I have lost interest in. I'm hoping that I will get bored and fall asleep, but like I said, this is the third night I haven't gotten good sleep so I am not optimistic that listening to people I can no longer stand talk about video games will help me finally forget about fear.
Every night of this trip I chastise myself. How could I forget those two orange bottles sitting on my desk? That stupid $40 desk from Walmart that took me three days to build because I lack patience. To further annoy myself, I make a list of things I brought in my backpack. Things I absolutely do not need. Things I brought instead of my medications. Two glasses cases, neither of which have my spare glasses inside of them. Swimming goggles, pssh shit goddamn it. We weren't planning on swimming I hate swimming. A watch that has not had a working battery in it for 3 years.
-- from f4w: Mitsuharu Misawa, one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all-time, was declared dead at 10:10 p.m. Saturday night at a hospital in Hiroshima from an apparent heart attack after being being given a back suplex in a tag team title match.
Misawa would have turned 47 on June 18th.
Misawa, the president of Pro Wrestling NOAH, was teaming with Go Shiozaki in a match challenging Bison Smith & Akitoshi Saito for the GHC tag team championship in Hiroshima. Misawa was given the move at about 8:45 p.m. and knocked unconscious. They were about 27 minutes into the match when the referee immediately stopped the match seeing what had happened.
According to eye witness reports, Saito gave Misawa a "routine" back suplex that was described as a "7" in danger on a scale of one-to-ten. He did not get up. It was chaos in the ring as they attempted to revive him using CPR and the crowd was hushed for a while, and began a "Misawa" chant. He turned purple in the ring and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
His heart stopped beating in the ring.
The wrestlers were told on the bus that he had passed away.
While it is being reported that he passed away at the hospital, he may have actually passed away in the ring.
Misawa was the Japanese high school national wrestling champion at 187 pounds in 1980, and was recruited by Giant Baba into All Japan Pro Wrestling. He gained his first taste of stardom in 1984 when he was chosen to be the second Tiger Mask. After unmasking in 1990, he became an even bigger star after a series of singles matches with Jumbo Tsuruta.
He was Japan's biggest pro wrestling star of the 90s, and one could make a strong case for him as the top wrestler of the decade. He was the Wrestler of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 1999.
After the death of Shohei "Giant" Baba, Misawa wrestled a little over one more year for All Japan Pro Wrestling, while working as company president. After consistently butting heads with owner Motoko Baba, the widow of Shohei Baba, he and 90% of the All Japan roster quit the company to form Pro Wrestling NOAH.
The movie "The Wrestler" opened tonight in Japan. Because of the finish of the movie, this has become part of the story in some outlets in Japan.
What is "I'd Beat Ums" you ask? Well, I think if you listen to the show you'll realize that it's pretty self explanatory. Spiz and Pierre get together and we rank the top 5 people that we would like to beat those with. We don't mean to do it, but our women listeners might get completely offended. That's not true. We are very tasteful when we list our dream scenarios. Then there's some etceteraetcetera. Please leave a comment or question on the post if you like the show. Subscribe and review the show on iTunes. Also, tell your friends. Please tell your friends. Thanks and enjoy!
So almost a month later, Spiz drags his new wife to the cave with all the recording equipment. We talk marriage, the ceremony, the honeymoon and there are the musical breaks in between. There ain't nothing left to say because I've been sleeping really late this week playing Resident Evil 5. Enjoy the time we spend together. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, review the show on iTunes, leave a comment on this post and we'll read it next week.
So I finally finished Fallout 3 and I have to say that it would have given Left 4 Dead some competition for "Best Game Evar 2008" had I played it last year but I didn't really pick it up until Christmas and by then I was already stuck on playing Left 4 Dead so I didn't give Fallout 3 much time. I played it for a few hours but found myself getting really annoyed with the game because I felt like my character was so weak that getting into combat was not fun. Fighting mutated moles was too challenging and usually left me with an smidgen of HP. I used to think, "How can anyone think this is fun?"
A couple of weeks ago I gave the game another shot. I didn't try to do quests right away, rather, I just kept fighting Mole Rats and whatever little creatures I could. I just wanted to level up a little and find more guns and ammo. Once I built up a nice collection of weapons, I played some quests and it just became more and more interesting. My character got stronger and the perks were really interesting. I chose to have a Cannibal perk which allowed me to eat humans to gain HP back but every time you ate someone's butt you would lose karma. Also I felt punished every time I ate someone because the camera angle would switch from first person to third person. You have to watch your character eat someone, sound effects included. I thought that was interesting to show that. It's like the game developers wanted you(the player) to see what a fucking asshole you are. I sort of regretting choosing that perk but I never gave it a second thought if I was close to death. "Do what you gotta do." That's what I kept saying all throughout the game.
Some of the scenarios the game put you in really made me think differently, in terms of gaming. I won't spoil things because you should experience the game for yourself. When I play RPG's, usually I try to play the good role; I try to answer politely and I didn't kill if I didn't have to. However, I slowly found myself playing more evil because that would get me the most stuff. I needed to kill because I needed food, money, or guns. After one quest where I reluctantly chose the evil route, I got so mad at myself that I went on a killing spree. I killed a roaming salesman because I wanted blueprints for a weapon and they were ridiculously expensive. I thought, "Shit, what's stopping me from just killing this guy and taking his stuff? I'm going to do that."
Fallout 3 questions your morals. You might do the right thing now, but what if you woke up and actually saw the world and there was nothing but destruction. Would you act the same way? I sure wouldn't have I guess. It was a very thought provoking experience and you can't help but enjoy that feeling. One complaint(besides what I said earlier about being a weak ass at the beginning)is that the ending came out of nowhere. It was very abrupt and that made me really angry, but Bethesda just released some DLC that supposedly changes the ending, as well as increases the level cap from 20 to 30 so I'll be definitely picking that up so I can play some more in The Capital Wasteland. Do some quests, shoot some mutants in the face, get radiated, etc.

Now that I'm jobless, I celebrated today by going to my local library to borrow the first three volumes of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. It's a comic series that the former fucktards behind GFW Radio and the current fucktards of the Out of the Game podcast champion as a must read series. I was there at the library with the wife and it just crossed my mind to see if they had it and they did so I picked them up. I'm still reading Murakami but I'm flying though this first volume of Walking Dead so I can read both. Someone read Walking Dead with me so we can talk about it on teh podcast.
Not only did I get Resident Evil 5 in the mail, I also picked up Raiden Fighter Aces. It's a compilation of all the Raiden games. You remember those games. It was all the thugs were playing at TV Arcade when they weren't playing Street Fighter II. It's a shmup and that's one of my favorite genres. It was only $20 bucks so it was an automatic purchase. I'm sorta debating whether or not to get the new Punch Out Wiimake. I wasn't planning on getting it, but Amazon has it for $40 bucks and that might be the sweet spot in terms of price. I've played Punch Out so many times and they didn't change much(so I've heard) but it got a decent make over and Punch Out is still fun. I just lost my job but I signed up for unemployment and I got some pension monies coming so of course I'm going to get some games. Plus I still need to pack up. Lots to do I guess.
enjoying the view, altering paths, re-decorating routes, NARC'ing on the doldrums, cursing at the heavens, cuddling with mundanity; really i have no clue what this blog is about and i think it's better off that way. all i knows is it's about sharing.
